Artist Profile
Guitarist of jazz-like music
Pete Oxley is a highly respected British jazz guitarist, composer, and educator who has become a cornerstone of the UK jazz scene over the last few decades.
He is perhaps best known for his long-standing collaboration with Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier in the Oxley-Meier Guitar Project. Together, they produce a "world jazz" sound characterized by intricate arrangements and an eclectic array of instruments, ranging from 12-string and fretless guitars to sitar-guitars.
Beyond his duo work, Oxley leads the seven-piece band Hejira, which celebrates the jazz-fusion era of Joni Mitchell, and he co-founded the award-winning Spin Jazz Club in Oxford, which has hosted some of the world's finest jazz musicians.
What makes Oxley particularly unique is the breadth of his artistry; he is a prolific composer with several pieces featured in the European Real Book, and he has released over 15 albums of original material. Interestingly, his expertise extends beyond the fretboard—he is also a world-renowned master bow maker, specializing in the restoration and creation of 19th-century French-style violin bows. His playing style is often described as lyrical and harmonically rich, blending traditional jazz sensibilities with global folk influences.
